Abstract

The method of transporting live fish herein described consists in the use of the container Viniconí¢ (SANSUY Plastic Industry) originally employed for carrying various materials such as minerals, rocks, Portland cement, etc. It is made of Vinilonaí¢ from PVC. Two types of containers were used: the first was a vertical cylinder, 800 L capacity and the second, horizontal, ellipsoid with 1,000 L of capacity. Several fish species has been transported with 100% success, including the Brazilian cat-fish (Pseudoplatystoma coruscans), "curimatás" (Prochilodus spp), "dourados" (Salminus brasiliensis) and Nile tilapias. The containers were installed on trucks of different sizes, pick-ups, vans and on trailers. The system allowed long distance transports of live fish in a very practical manner. The containers are low weighed and can be quickly repaired in the field. When not in use, its storage is facilitated since it is easily folded up.
