Fishering activity during sand bar opening in the Iquipari lagoon, São João da Barra, RJ

Abstract

Historically, the sand bar opening has been conducted to improve the fishing productivity in the coastal lagoons. Fishermen action during the bar opening of the Iquipari lagoon was evaluated by interviews of one hundred individuals, containing 15 questions in order to access their living circumstances, fishery strategies, and expectancy about resource usage. Three areas of the lagoon were analyzed. The fishermen found in the south and middle areas showed an inferior social condition compared to that of the group found in the north of the lagoon (close to the open bar). They used a diversity of fishing strategies to capture fresh water fishes. The fishermen found near the open bar captured mainly immigrated marine species during the tidal rising, compromising the objective of the opening.
