Characterization of fishing production through time in the city of Cananéia, São Paulo south coast

The fishing production in the city of Cananeia í SP was characterized evaluating data from literature and information available through the institutional database, together with fishermen historical perceptions about fishing in the region. It was observed a fishing production decrease and fishing effort increase to maintain the production during the last years. Industrial fishing is responsible for the greatest part of the production, even representing the minority of producing units. In general, artisanal fishermen are older, work in fishing longer and emphasize the fishing effort increase over the years. On the other hand, industrial fishermen are younger, work in fishing shorter and do not notice differences in fishing effort through time. The artisanal fishing decreased through the years due to high competition in the fishing sector. A bibliographic collection about this activity allied to artisanal fishermen historical knowledge can support more realistic analyzes of the fishing situation in Cananeia region.
