Type of spawning and fecundity of Astyanax schubart Britski, 1964 (Pisces, Characiformes, Characidae), in Ibitinga Reservoir, São Paulo State, Brazil

Abstract

This paper describes the fecundity and type of spawning behavior of Astyanax schubarti in Ibitinga Reservoir (21° 46' S - 48° 59' W), São Paulo State, collected from June 1989 to May 1990. A total of 31 mature females was examined and the average fecundity resulted was 4,924 ovocytes. For determination of type of spawning, 145 females were used. It was observed that the spawning is discontinuous, with annual periodicity and higher frequency in December - January.
