Abstract

Genetics, Development, Histology and CuIture studies on Red Tilapia are reviewed. The Red Tilapia strain was found in Taiwan, where most of the red strains is originated. This strain seems to be the combination of at least four different species and the red gene probably having come from a red mutant of Oreochromis mossambicus. The red characteristics has aroused a great commercial interest, which can increase the consumption and cultivation of Tilapias in many countries over the world. Various genetics investigations have been published in order to elucidate the genetics mechanisms which control this characteristics, as well as the performance of various Red Tilapia strains. The great importance in going deeper into these studies is to find out and ameliorate new Tilapia strains, so as to increase its consumption.
