Abstract

A study of freezing rainbow trout semen, Salmo irideus Gibbons, with dry ice and stored in liquid nitrogen (LN2) was carried out at the Estação Experimental de Salmonicultura de Campos do Jordão, São Paulo. Thirty minutes after cryopreservation, the semen was thawed as rapidly as possible and immediately mixed with fresh eggs. In forty tests the average percentage of fertilization with cryopreserved sperm was 10.55%, and with the control fresh semen was 77.57%. Further investigations will have to be conducted in order to achieve better fertility results under practical hatchery conditions.
