The ichthyofauna of Ponte Nova reservoir (high Tietê River, São Paulo State, Southeastern Brazil) is composed by 24 species, most of them endemics and of a small size and little commercial value. The current results of captures, during 2000/2001, when compared with those previously obtained (1975) indicate population depletion of some species. On the other hand, the introduction of exotic species has been observed in elapsing of the years. The capability of population auto-regulation and the type of spawning in the reservoir enable the establishment of programs of recovery and conservation considered in the present work.
