Perception of fishermen in the northern Rio de Janeiro State about the viability of artisanal fishery with the implementation of megaenterprise of port

Abstract

The aim of this study is describe the perception of families that depends of artisanal fishery in northern Rio de Janeiro State in relation to the influence of Industrial Logistic Complex of Port of Açu (CLIPA) on this activity. Between 2011 and 2015 we performed 270 ethnographic interviews in Atafona, Barra do Açu, and Farol de São Tome, totaling 90 interviews in each locality, 30 between fishermen, 30 between their spouses and 30 between their sons. In Atafona and Farol de Sao Tome, fishery is mainly in the ocean and in Barra do Açu is lacustrine, involving nets, lines and traps. The interviewees related losses to the fishery caused by CLIPA, but the overfishing was indicated too. In Barra do Açu, the fishery is critically affected by CLIPA, because it is located in area of direct influence of enterprise. The interviewees suggested as solutions to the interferences of CLIPA, the lifting of restrictions related to fishery and training of fishermen in other activities.
