Analysis of genetic diversity of farm-raised tilapia stocks from Santa Catarina state (Brazil) using microsatellite markers

Three varieties of tilapia farmed at Panamá-Unisul Finfish Culture Station in Santa Catarina State were analyzed in order to evaluate the genetic diversity through microsatellites analysis. Genetic and genotypic differentiation, as well as, the degree of genetic divergence from all populations (FST) were significant (P<0.01). Using FST pairwise analysis from all populations, it was observed that the GIFT population had the highest divergence when compared to the VERMELHA (VERM) (FST = 0.11) and the PANAMÁ (PAN) (FST = 0.18). The GIFT variety (FIS = 0.16) presented the lower inbreeding coefficient when compared to the local varieties PAN (FIS = 0.33) and VERM (FIS = 0.28), showing that this variety had controlled management. The results obtained in this study evidence the importance of controlled management in farmed tilapias in order to maintain the genetic diversity of populations.
