Abstract

The growth and mortality parameters of bigeye tuna, Thunnus obesus (Lowe, 1839), caught by longliners settled in Santos (SP) and operating off the Brazilian Southeast-southern coast, from 1977 to 1995, were estimated: K = 0.136 and Ly = 295.5 cm, through the identification of the modal classes. The rate of total mortality calculated by the capture curve method of the software ELEFAN II presented more consistent results. The RIKHTER and EFANOV (1976) method, whose result was similar to those of the literature, was used for the calculation of the rate of natural mortality. The state of exploitation of the stock shows overfishing during the 1977-1995 period, but such a conclusion should be seen with caution because the studied area represents just a little part of the whole Atlantic.
