Abstract

From April 1974 to November 1975, 4 different types of fishing gear (otter trawl, gill net, casting net and fish-trap) were used to sample marine catfish in Cananéia. The species caught in the lagoon-estuarine complex of Cananéia were Arius spixii (Agassiz, 1829), Netuma barba (Lacépí¨de, 1803), Genidens genidens (Valenciennes, 1839), Sciadeichthys luniscutis (Valenciennes, 1840), Bagre marinus (Mitchill, 1814), Bagre bagre (Linnaeus, 1766) and Notarius grandicassis (Valenciennes, 1840). The geographic distribution of these catfishes is variable according to species and individual body length. The type of fishing gear influenced directly the volume of fish and the size of each species of catfish.
