Abstract

A study about the growth, recruitment and mortality of Prochilodus lineatus (Valenciennes, 1836), dominant species in the floodplain of the high Paraná river (22°40' -22°50'S and 53°15' -53°40'W) was performed. Fishes were collected monthly from March 1992 through February 1993. Simple stationary nets and trammel nets were installed in different ambient of the floodplain. The analysis were realized by retrocalculation methods, for the estimate growth parameters. The program FISAT was used to estimate the growth parameters, recruitment and mortality by the length frequency distribution. The results show that for P. lineatus the assintotic length was 60.14 cm, by non linear method (highly significative by retrocalculation for length and age), the growth velocity was 0.17 and the total mortality was 1.39. The recruitment pattern evidenced an annual peak for P. lineatus, with the higher frequencies occurring in March and April.
