Abstract

A study about the composition and populational dynamics of Portunus spinimanus was carried out in a 82 m long coastline at Frade Island (20°18’S and 40°17’W), Vitoria - ES. Samplings were done from May 2004 to April 2005, on a monthly basis, with a "picare†seine net (6 m x 2 m and 10 mm mesh opening). In each sampling, the net was thrown eight times, contiguously and parallel to the seashore, from 6:00 to 12:00 AM, during low tide periods. Individuals were preserved in 70% alcohol and, in the laboratory, they were counted and sexed and the width and length of the carapace were measured with a 0.1 mm precision caliper. A total of 146 individuals were collected (84 females and 62 males). Two ovigerous females were reported in October 2004. The largest numbers were reported in July and October 2004 and the smallest ones in February 2005. The largest width averages were reported in September and October 2004 and the smallest ones in March and April 2005. The largest number of individuals was observed in 10-19.9 mm width carapace class. Males were reported in all width classes, while females were concentrated in intermediate classes. P. spinimanus may be living in the area for recruitment, feeding and reproduction, due to some evidences such as predominance of juvenile individuals, abundant feeding resources and occurrence of ovigerous females.
