Fishery production during 2003-2005 at Vila Velha fishery cooperative, Espí­­rito Santo, southeastern Brazil

Abstract

It was compiled, during 2005, data on the production in tons of commercial value species family captured at Cooperativa de Pesca in Vila Velha (COOPEVES), Espí­­rito Santo, southeast of Brazil. The data were quantified from January 2003 to August 2005 in order to characterize the fishing activity at this landing point. At COOPVES, it is employed three fishing techniques (pargueira, jogada í  hand-lines and espinhel í  long-line). The production average during three years presented a growing tendency of 60 tons in 2003, 79 tons in 2004 and 82 tons in 2005. It was found 10 families that had outstanded at the landing points. The family with the highest number of species was Carangidae, followed by Lutjanidae, Serranidae e Scombridae. However, the most representative families in the production were Lutjanidae e Serranidae, with a total production of 377.12 tons for 2003. These values represent 51.38% and 16.75% of the total production for the year, respectively. In 2004 and 2005, the fishing production followed the same pattern. In this present study, it was also possible to observe that the fishery of the species Balistes capriscus had also suffered a remarkable reduction, which had made it no economic and replaced by B. vetula.
