Fishing characterization and socioeconomic profile of the fishermen that act on the Recife bridges - PE - Brazil

Abstract

In order to characterize the fishing practiced on the bridges of Recife, identifying the socio-economic profile of workers, interviews were conducted with 22 fishermen in Maurice of Nassau, Old Bridge Rotary and Buarque de Macedo (Recife - PE) bridges. From this universe, 100% were males aged 10-70 years. Gears used to capture and extract fishes were the casting net, the jereré and the handline. Two municipalities were cited as place of residence, Recife (77%) and Olinda (23%). Urban fishermen carry out activities of bricklayer, safetyman, manufacturer and other informal jobs. The "urban†fishing practice is seasonal, occurring with less frequency in the rainiest months of the year (June, July and August). The species caught during the dry season are the mullet (Mugil brasiliensis), the saúna (a mullet of smaller size) and carapeba (Diapterus spp.), and in the rainy season, are yellow catfish (Cathorops spixii), bass (Centropomus spp.) and tarpon (Megalops atlanticus).
