First occurrence of Pseudomyicola spinosus in Anadara ovalis in the Paranaguá Estuarine Complex - Brazil

Abstract

The aim of this study was to verify the occurrence of the Pseudomyicola spinosus (Copepoda) associated to the bivalve Anadara ovalis in the Paranaguá Estuarine Complex (CEP), Paraná. Bivalve samples (N = 6) were collected in July 2010 at Mel Island, located in the CEP. The results showed the presence of P. spinosus in the branchial filaments and mantle of bivalves analyzed. The copepods were measured in relation to total length, length of the sack of eggs and the prevalence and intensity of infestation analyzed. Mean total length of copepods was 2.25 mm (± 0.21) and the mean of the sack of eggs was 0.88 mm (± 0.03). Mean intensity of infestation was 1.17 (± 0.75) copepod x bivalve-1. The occurrence of copepod in A. ovalis may indicate a future problem for malacoculture in the Paraná state.
