Abstract

The spermatozoa of 27 specimens of common carp, Cyprinus carpio, 55 of piavuçu, Leporinus macrocephalus, and 48 of curimbatá, Prochilodus lineatus, were evaluated. The fishes were induced to reproduction with hypophysis extract of carp (CHE), broiler chicken (BCHE), and rabbit (RHE). Rubbing were produced and stained using Rosa Bengala’s method, in order to evaluate 200 to 230 spermatozoa of each fish. Considering C. carpio and P. lineatus, there was no difference (P > 0.05) among the treatments (CHE, BCHE, and RHE) in what concerns the occurrence of normal spermatozoa. However, in individuals of L. macrocephalus induced with RHE (30.2%), the number of normal spermatozoa was smaller (P < 0.05) in relation to that of the fishes induced with CHE (51%) or BCHE (46.5%). The values of the incidence of primary abnormalities were similar (P < 0.05) among the tested species, that is, taking into consideration the three used treatments, such values were: in C. carpio, 13.8; 10.3 and 15.2%, in L. macrocephalus, 12.5; 9.5 and 8.2%, and in P. lineatus, 14.3; 15 and 15.1%, with the treatments CHE, BCHE, and RHE, respectively. Concerning the secondary spermatic abnormalities, its occurrence in L. macrocephalus was greater in the animals induced with RHE (P < 0.05). In C. carpio, the highest frequency of secondary abnormalities was also registered (P < 0.05) in the individuals induced with RHE (32.7%), but the difference in relation to the other treatments was small, that is, in CHE the frequency of such abnormalities was 23.6%. In P. lineatus there was no difference (P < 0.05) among the occurrences of the secondary abnormalities, considering the used treatments of induction. Relative to the different spermatic abnormalities registered in the present study, loose head and loose tail were the most frequent in the three species: C. carpio, L. macrocephalus, and P. lineatus, induced with CHE, BCHE, and RHE. Based on the obtained data, it can be stated that RHE is not to be indicated for inducing L. macrocephalus males, although there is no informations for interpreting the appearance of fish spermatozoa abnormalities.
