Abstract

Reciprocal hybrids of fat snook (Centropomus parallelus) x common snook (Centropomus undecimalis) were obtained using fresh semen. Other hybrid, from fat snook (♀) x common snook (ââ„¢"š), was obtained with cryopreserved semen that was prepared by an especially developed technology. With fresh milt in the experiment fat snook (♀) x common snook (ââ„¢"š), average rates of fertilization and hatching were 60 ± 10 and 40 ± 8% respectively. The number of produced larvae and the time of larval survival (7 days) were higher than those registered in common snook (♀) x fat snook (ââ„¢"š), in that average rates of fertilization and hatching were 5 ± 1 and 11 ± 4% respectively. When using cryopreserved semen, which exhibited 40 ± 5% of motility after thawing, average rates of fertilization and hatching were 12 ± 2.5 and 1 ± 0.4% respectively. These results indicate the necessity of realization of new experiments aiming to know the performance of hybrid snook larvae in larviculture conditions.
