Abstract

The amount of dolphin-fish caught in south of Brazil during summer increased since 2001 due to demand of exportation companies based in Itajaí, in the state of Santa Catarina. Most of catches was landed by semi-industrial boats of Itaipava (Espírito Santo state) that fishes with hooks and lines. This work presents descriptions of catches, fishing effort and CPUEs, so as a discussion about the strategy adopted by the fishermen. Production peaked in 2003, when 711 ton had being landed. CPUE declined from 585 kg/1,000 hooks in 2001 to 184 kg/1,000 hooks in 2005. Fishing strategy adopted by fishermen suggests a high degree of specialization of the fleet.
