Abstract

Chlorella ellipsoidea S-l was cultivated in transparent polietylene bags with continuous aeration of 1 liter of air per minute for each bag, under permanent illumination of aproximately 4,000 lux, at laboratory. At the 5th day a total of 14.5 million of cell/mL was obtained. The best average production was between the 3rd and 5th days. The initial density of 105 cell/mL or 106 cells/mL had no influence in the total quantity of cells after the 4th day. Cultures of smaller initial density (105 cells/mL) had shown a better specific growth rate (µ = 2.2).
