The selection of items will be based on originality, quality and scientific merit.

The evaluation process used by the Editorial Board of Boletim do Instituto de Pesca is the "single blind review" system by peers, i.e. confidentiality of the identity of both authors and reviewers, which will be maintained throughout the process. All contributions will be initially assessed by the editor for suitability for the journal. Papers deemed suitable are then typically sent to a minimum of two independent expert reviewers to assess the scientific quality of the paper. The Editorial Board will take care that the reviewers of each article are compulsorily of different institutions of origin of those authors. The Editor is responsible for the final decision regarding acceptance or rejection of articles. The Editor's decision is final.

Open Science

BIP has aligned itself with Open Science communication practices and adopts simple anonymized evaluation, where the identity of the authors is made available to the evaluators. During the evaluation process, evaluators can choose to reveal their identities and interact with the authors. The name of the area editor responsible for processing the manuscripts is published in the final version of the article.

BIP recommends that authors deposit manuscripts as preprints to speed up the circulation of article data before peer review. A preprint is defined as a manuscript that is ready for submission to a journal and that is deposited on reliable servers before or in parallel with submission to a journal. The use of a preprint is at the author's option and it is assumed that, when submitting, the name of the preprint server and its DOI will be entered into the submission system. Articles submitted as preprints share with the journals the unpublished nature of the publication. When a manuscript with a preprint deposit is accepted for publication, both will be listed through the DOI assigned to them. BIP recommends preprint repositories such as BioRXiv, AgriRxiv, EmeRI and SciELO Preprints.

The Boletim do Instituto de Pesca offers immediate free access to its content, following the principles of free and democratized open access to scientific knowledge, according to the Gold Open Access model. To maximize the dissemination and use of published material, the BIP adopts the Creative Commons license with CC BY 4.0 attribution. Thus, copyright will belong to the authors, providing free and immediate access to the work and allowing any user to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search or create links to the full texts of the articles, crawl for indexing, pass as data to software or use for any other legal purpose, including commercial purposes, as long as due credit is given. Authors are allowed to deposit all versions of their work [Preprint (Submitted Version), Accepted Manuscript (Accepted Manuscript Version), Published Article (Version of Record)] in an institutional or thematic repository, without embargo.

The Boletim do Instituto de Pesca recommends that authors, whenever applicable, deposit and share the data, codes and/or methods used in the production of the manuscript. It is up to the responsible author to inform the chosen repository during the submission process, enabling access to evaluators and editors, unless this is not possible for ethical, privacy or confidentiality reasons. To ensure full transparency of the data obtained, the BIP requires authors to declare that, for data not available in public repositories, it is available on request. In such cases, authors must state why the data is not publicly available. If data sharing is not applicable to the article because no datasets were generated or analyzed during the study, this must be declared. Research data includes, but is not limited to: raw data, processed data, spreadsheets, statistics, laboratory notebooks, field notebooks, questionnaires, photographs, methodologies, standards and protocols. Authors can use their institution's data repository or choose a data repository from re3data.org or SciELO_list recommended repositories. Other options are Dryad, Figshare, Zenodo, Mendeley Data, OSF and SciELO Data.
