The present paper was developed at the Fishery Experimental Station of Pindamonhangaba, São Paulo State, Brazil, from October 1985 to September 1987. The experiment was carried out to evaluate the zooplankton composition and density, and the seasonal variation in fish ponds, associated to physical and chemical factors of the waters, as well as the possible correlation between these parameters and fish growth. Two fish ponds with 2,140 m² and two treatments were employed: Pond T1 - cow manure and chemical fertilizer; Pond T2 - chicken manure and chemical fertilizer. Qualitative and quantitative analysis of the zooplankton were carried out weekly. The results show an increase in zooplankton density in the pond submitted to chicken manure, with a concomitant increase in fish production. The values of physical, chemical and biological factors in the pond T2, indicate its good conditions of productivity.
