Operational cost of alevins production of curimbatá, Prochilodus scrofa (Steindachner,1881) by induced spawning

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is the determination of the operational cost of production of Prochilodus scrofa alevins, using human chorionic gonadotropin - HCG (Pregnyl) to induced spawning. From May through November/1989 two hundred breeders of curimbatá were kept in two different 360 m2 earthen tanks. They were fed with pelleted balanced diet containing 25% crude protein at a rate of 1.5% (May through August) and 3%(between September and November) of body weight/day. In November/1989, seventeen females were induced to spawning with two intramuscular injections of 5 IU/g and 10 IU/g total weight of HCG at 10 hours intervals. The males received a single dose when the 2nd dose was given to the females. After 3 months, 70,250 alevins measuring 6.2 cm and weighing 7.00 g were obtained. The average survival rate was 7.0%. The operational cost related to the maintaining of the breeders was US$ 599.72 and to rearing alevins, US$ 415.70. The operational cost to produce one alevin was US$ 0.014.
