The purpose of this experiment carried out at the Estação de Aquicultura de Jupiá (CESP), SP, in December 1984, it was to observe the survival and growth rate of Piaractus mesopotamicus by changing the stocking density and food quality. The trial was developed in two series of 5 sheltered tanks and stocking densities of 10, 20, 80, 100 and 200 larvae/liter were utilized. In one series the larvae were fed on plankton egg and in the other one on plankton + yeast. Satisfactory results of survival rate were obtained at the density of 80 larvae/liter and plankton + yeast as food but there had no difference in the growth related to density or food. It was observed predation of larvae by adult cyclopoid copepods. Water temperature was recorded daily and dissolved oxygen and pH, periodically.
