Abstract

In Varginha hatchery (23°46'S and 46°33'W), São Paulo State, Brazil, of Instituto de Pesca, the effect of the densities 25, 35, 45 and 55 fishes per tank of 16.56 m³, each on the weight gain of scaled carp fingerlings, totalizing 800 individuals, was studied. The experimental design was in randomized blocks of 4 treatments and 5 repetitions. The analysis of variance took in consideration the linear, quadratic and cubic regression. The null hypothesis was rejected at 5% probability level. The utilized and tested mathematical model showed an efficiency of 78.40% in relation to the entirely randomized mode!. The best density found was 3.56 individuals per square meter.
