Abstract

This study refers to the morphological changes of ovaries of pacu, Piaractus mesopotamicus, during its reproductive cycle, reared in three ponds of 1,000 m2 each one. The research was performed in the Aquaculture Center of Jupiá - CESP, SP, from March, 1984 to February, 1986. The oocytes can be divided into five development phases: chromatin-nucleolus, perinucleolus, cortical-alveolus (yolk vesicle), vitellogenic, and ripe. According to the macro and microscopic morphological changes of the ovaries, a scale of four stages has been elaborated: Resting, Maturation, Mature, and Regression.
